Department of Electrical Power Engineering (POWER)

The Department of Electrical Power Engineering (POWER) is an academic unit within the Faculty of Electrical Engineering (FKE) at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. Comprising 36 distinguished academic staff, the department specializes in the critical pillars of modern infrastructure: power systems, sustainable energy, power electronics, and high-voltage engineering.

The department is dedicated to establishing itself as a global center of excellence. It achieves this by integrating high-caliber academic instruction with pioneering research, professional consultancy, and specialized technical training.

The department’s core strength lies in its highly qualified faculty, the majority of whom hold doctoral degrees and maintain active profiles in international research communities. This synergy between industry-leading research and pedagogy ensures the delivery of rigorous, future-ready academic programs:

  • Undergraduate: Bachelor of Electrical Engineering with Honours.
  • Postgraduate (Coursework): Master of Engineering in Electrical Power and Energy (previously known as Master of Engineering (Electrical Power)).
  • Research Degrees: Supervision of Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) candidates across all power-related disciplines.

The department’s research activities are channeled through three specialized entities, fostering an environment that produces high-impact publications for top-tier journals and international conferences:

  • Institute of High Voltage and High Current (IVAT): An MS ISO/IEC 17025 accredited center specializing in dielectric materials, lightning protection, and advanced condition monitoring for power apparatus.
  • Centre of Energy Systems (CEES): Focused on grid modernization through renewable energy integration, power quality monitoring and mitigation, and the optimization of energy economics.
  • Power Electronics and Drives Research Group (PEDG): Dedicated to high-efficiency power conversion topologies, wide-bandgap semiconductor applications, and advanced control systems for electric mobility and industrial drives.

Through strategic consultancy and competitive research grants, the department consistently secures significant funding, reinforcing its status as a vital contributor to both the national economy and the global advancement of power engineering.
