21st November 2017 – Advanced Telecommunication Technology (ATT) research group, in collaboration with Communication Engineering Department in the Faculty of Electrical Engineering (FKE) has successfully organized Internet-of-Things (IoT) Carnival 2017. The event was hosted as a platform to provide exposure for the public regarding recent advancement in the development and deployment of IoT technologies. The initiative was also meant to promote National Transformation 2050 (TN50) roadmap in preparing Malaysians for Industry 4.0 revolution, whereby IoT technologies are expected to play significant transformation roles for many prevailing industrial systems.
The IoT carnival kicked-off with welcoming speech by the head of ATT, Dr. Rozeha Bt. A. Rashid to participants of IoT-Thon that consists of students from three high schools in nearby Skudai and Johor Bahru. The IoT-Thon was an edutainment activity organized for the high school students as an approach to educate them on IoT while at the same time being enjoyable. Dr Rozeha, in her welcoming speech, had sparked interest among the participants on IoT with her demonstration on scenarios where IoT had transformed and will continue to improve human lifestyle in the future. The IoT-Thon was held afterward simultaneously with parallel sessions of IoT showcases.

The IoT carnival continued with the opening ceremony in the afternoon session. Prof. Dr. Johari Halim Shah Osman, dean of FKE had officiated the carnival before passing the baton to ATT’s invited speaker, Dr Mazlan Abbas for his “Journey Towards Industry 4.0 With IoT“ talk. Dr. Mazlan is the co-founder and CEO of FAVORIOT Sdn Bhd and is ranked among 50 Most Impactful Smart Cities Leaders by World CSR Congress 2017. In his talk, Dr Mazlan emphasized on how Malaysia needs a pool of IoT-specialized generation to turn the National IoT Strategic Framework into a reality.
As a whole, the 2017 IoT carnival was regarded as achieving its objectives that was outlined by FKE in coordinating a corporate social responsibility program to promote awareness to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education that is in line with the government’s National STEM Action Plan 2017 initiatives. The IoT carnival 2017 was co-sponsored by several industry partners that include Iconix Consulting Sdn. Bhd, Digi.Com Berhad, OCK Group Berhad, Kudrat Maritime Sdn. Bhd. and Dymenz Sdn. Bhd.
