Health Science (PEEH)

The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering was introduced to complement the existing research master’s program. This program is a multi-disciplinary research programme for those who already hold a master’s degree and would like to expand and upgrade their knowledge. This program produces human capital, which is not only intellectual and competent in modern and advanced technology but also versatile and capable of handling problems in real-life situations. Successful completion of the program will prove that candidates have successfully gone through comprehensive and rigorous research training. The Ph.D. thesis is expected to make a major contribution to discipline by way of new knowledge. The degree is awarded based on a comprehensive oral examination (viva voce) of the thesis submitted by the candidate on the completion of the study. Prospective graduate students should prepare themselves adequately, both in the fundamental subject matter necessary for advanced work and other branches of learning, so they may conduct quality research and successfully complete their programs.

Intake March/October* every year

  • Application for February* intake is open from September to November (for international student) and from September to December (for local student).
  • Application for October* intake is open from March to June (for international student) and from March to July (for local student).

PhD graduates from UTM’s Faculty of Electrical Engineering (FKE) have wide career prospects. PhD holders are well-prepared for careers as research scientists, academics, senior consultants, industry leaders in health science. Graduates can pursue roles as researchers in universities or institutes, consultants, lecturers, product managers, design engineers, and software developers in healthcare technology. Overall, the PhD equips graduates with advanced expertise for leadership in research, academia, consultancy, industry, and technology development, though success often depends on aligning research skills with industry demands and strategic career planning.

Program Learning Outcome (PLO)

At the end of this programme, graduates from this program are expected to have the
following outcomes:

PLO 1: Synthesize, critique, apply, and extend in-depth relevant knowledge independently using innovative techniques, tools, and skills in the field of Health Science as a basis for research to produce new ideas and solution.

PLO 2: Create new knowledge/theories/ solutions/practice through independent research and originality that satisfies international standards within the field of Biomedical Engineering using the latest techniques, tools, and skills.

PLO 3: Integrate highly advanced, specialized research methodologies based on the forefront knowledge and latest development in the field of Biomedical Engineering to solve complex research problems with a reasonable degree of originality.

PLO 4: Demonstrate decent collaboration with peers, scholarly communities and society at large in the relevant field of expertise and research.

PLO 5: Communicate effectively the knowledge, skills, ideas and research findings using appropriate methods to peers, scholarly communities, and societies through various medium.

PLO 6: Use, improve existing or develop new appropriate tools or methodologies using a broad range of digital technology, media and software to support and enhance research activities.

PLO 7: Demonstrate skills in designing, critical evaluation, and analysing numerical and graphical data using quantitative or qualitative tools to support and enhance research activities.

PLO 8 : Demonstrate leadership, professionalism and management skills, and take full responsibility for own work, and significantly for others in the research organization.

PLO 9 : Demonstrate the ability to manage and enhance own self- and where relevant be accountable for overall management of one’s research organization and professional development.

PLO 10 : Develop potential commercialisation research output.

Entry Requirement*

The admission requirements for students entering the Taught Course program are as follows:

i Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or its equivalent recognized by the University Senate (accredited program by the EAC body) with a CGPA ≥ 2.50 / 4.00 or CGPA < 2.50 / 4.00 with a minimum of 5 years of work experience in the relevant field; or
ii Bachelor’s degree in Engineering other than Electrical Engineering (e.g., Mechanical Engineering, Aeronautical Engineering, Civil Engineering, etc.) or its equivalent with a minimum CGPA ≥ 3.00 / 4.00 and 2 years of work experience in the field of electrical engineering; or
iii Bachelor’s degree in Science (Physics) or its equivalent with a minimum CGPA ≥ 3.00 / 4.00; or
iv

Bachelor’s degree in Science (Computer Science, Software, Information Technology) or its equivalent with a minimum CGPA ≥ 3.00 / 4.00 and 2 years of work experience in the field of electrical engineering; or

v

Bachelor’s degree in Engineering Technology (specifically in the field of electrical engineering) or its equivalent with a minimum CGPA ≥ 3.00 / 4.00; or

vi

Other qualifications approved by the Faculty’s Academic Committee.

Candidates who meet the requirements of  (ii – vi) are required to take and pass the prerequisite courses determined by the Faculty with a minimum grade of (B-).
